♥ November 8, 2021: Director Sandra Faber was interviewed recently on the subject of Earth’s Future by economist Russ Roberts, who runs a weekly podcast EconTalk on thought-provoking topics. You can find this video here.
♥ March 5, 2020: EFI is delighted to announce out new collaboration with award-winning Canadian visual artist Brad Necyk, whose work engages with a variety of important societal issues including Earth’s future. ♥ January 29, 2020: Joel Primack, Professor Emeritus of Physics, received the Lilienfeld Prize of the American Physical Society. The prize recognizes Primack “for seminal contributions to our understanding of the formation of structure in the universe, and for communicating to the public the extraordinary progress in our understanding of cosmology.” More details.
♥ January 11, 2020: Sandra Faber, Professor Emerita of Astronomy and Astrophysics, was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. The award recognizes Faber “for her outstanding research on the formation, structure and evolution of galaxies, and for her contributions to the optical design of the Keck Telescopes and other novel astronomical instruments.” More details.
♥ December 6, 2019: A UCSC team was chosen again to compete in Amazon’s Alexa Prize Challenge, which aims to advance conversational AI. Ten teams from universities around the world were selected from among hundreds of applicants to compete in the Alexa Prize Socialbot Grand Challenge 3. The UCSC team, named Athena, is led by faculty adviser Marilyn Walker, professor of computer science and engineering. More details.
♥ October 18, 2019: The Santa Cruz Genomics Institute moved into its new quarters at 2300 Delaware St. and celebrated with a standing-room-only gala party. More details.
♥ October 12, 2019: The director of the Center for Public Philosophy Jon Ellis and law student Francesca Hovagimian co-authored an editorial on the NY Times Opinion page entitled: “Are School Debate Competitions Bad for Our Political Discourse?” The digital version is available here.
